English in Action

U našoj školi ovog je ljeta (20.8.-24.8.) održan tečaj engleskog jezika English in Action za učenike bivših petih, šestih i sedmih razreda. Na tečaju je sudjelovalo 23 učenika podijeljenih u 2 grupe, mlađa grupa Waystage (A2 razina) i starija grupa Treshold (razina B1). Voditelji tečaja Alex i Tessa su bili veoma zadovoljni visokom razinom znanja engleskog jezika kod svih učenika, a posebno ih je oduševio pogled iz zbornice i učionica. Na kraju tečaja učenici su pripremili kratku priredbu za roditelje gdje su prikazali projekte na kojima su radili  (Olympic games, London, Nikola Tesla) i 2 odlična igrokaza (In a restaurant, BBC news). 

Interview with Alex (A)and Tessa (T).......

       Reporters  (R): Maroje Žuvelek and Petra Mihaljević  (7.a)

1.       R: Would you please introduce youselves to us?

A: My name is Alex, I'm from London,  England and I work for English in Action.

T: My name is Tessa Barber, I am an English teacher, from London and I work for English in Action.

2.       R: Why did you choose this job?

A: I really enjoy teaching young learners and travelling. This job enables me to do both.

T: I chose this career bacause I enjoy working in other countries and I like teaching languages.

3.       R: Would you tell us something about English in Action?

A: English in Action is a company based in Cantebury in Kent in England. It sends English teachers out to do contracts all over the world, especially Europe.

T: English in Action is a company which sends English teachers into schools around the world to teach English for one week.

4.       R: How many years has English in Action existed?

A / T: E.i.A has existed for about 10-15 years.

5.       R: Could you tell us in how many countries have you taught English?

A: I have taught English in 5 countries.

T: I have taught English in 6 countries.

6.       R: Would you like to change your job?

A: No, I enjoy this job.

T: I wouldn't like to change this job at the moment because I have the opportunity to travel.

7.       R: How are the schools in the UK organised?

A: In the UK there are primary schools, then secondary schools and then college or sixth form and then university  if students wish to go  on to further study. At primary and secondary school the day starts around  9 am and finishes at around 3.30 pm.

T: There are 5 lessons a day in primary and secondary school. Children go to primary school from 5-11 years old and to secondary from 11-18 years old.

8.       R: How would you describe the responsibilities of your position?

A: As an E.i.A teacher you have to travel to new schools weekly so you have a responsibility to know your Geography and be ready to meet new people. You have to plan lessons and look after the young learners and ensure classes are fun and exciting, whilst being informative.

T: As a teacher, I plan lessons everyday before I start the lessons. I teach about 6 lessons a day and work with students to improve their English.

9.       R: How many people work in this organisation?

A/T: There are over 100 teachers working for E.i.A.

10.   R: What is your typical work week, is overtime expected?

A: A typical week involves travelling to a new place on  Sunday (plane, train, bus etc….) meeting a contact teacher, planning lessons and then teaching Monday to Friday. Then having a day off on  Saturday and then travelling again on Sunday.

T: A typical work week is 30 hours of teaching time, but I normally work a little more than this with time spent  on planning, travelling and organising me show.

11.   R: Why do you like to work in this organisation?

A: They are well organised company who have many schools over Europe.

T: I like this organisation because the work is enjoyable and I have the opportunity to meet new people and go to new countries.

12.  R:  What would you like to change?

A: I would like to do more contracts outside Europe. E. g.  South America.

T: At the moment I wouldn't like to change anything.

13.   R: How would you describe a typical day in this organisation?

A/T: Wake up at 6.30/6.45 am, have breakfast in a guest house. Walk to work, teach for the day until 2 pm. Then do an activity in the afternoon (e.g.  go to the beach, go shopping…). Then have dinner in the evening + plan lessons ready to teach the next day.

14.   R: Do you like to work with kids?

A: Yes, I find young learners very enthusiastic and motivated and always ready to learn. Although, sometimes kids can be hard work and noisy.

T: I really enjoy working with kids of all ages.

15. R:  Did you enjoy working with us?

A: Yes, very much. All the students at you school have been welcoming, kind, interested and hard working.

T: I had a great time in Croatia, the students had a very high level of English and behaved perfectly. Also, the location was great and the view from my classroom was beautiful!
